Complete Dentures vs Partial Dentures

How complete and partial dentures differ, and the situations in which each is usually considered.

All patient education

The basic difference

A complete denture replaces every tooth in an arch. A partial denture replaces selected missing teeth and works alongside the natural teeth that remain.

Why remaining teeth matter

Natural teeth can help support and retain a partial denture, which changes how it is designed. The health of those teeth and their supporting gum and bone is therefore assessed carefully before planning.

Choosing between them

This is a clinical decision rather than a preference. Your dentist will consider the number and position of missing teeth, the condition of remaining teeth, bite, gum health and your own priorities before recommending an option.

This article is general information and does not replace a clinical examination. Treatment suitability is determined by your dentist after assessment.
