Dental Crowns vs Bridges: Understanding the Difference

How a crown differs from a bridge, and when each is typically considered.

All patient education

A crown covers one tooth

A crown is a restoration that covers a single tooth, often used where a tooth is heavily filled, fractured or root-treated and needs protection.

A bridge spans a gap

A bridge replaces one or more missing teeth by connecting to supporting teeth or implants on either side of the space.

How the choice is made

The decision depends on which teeth are involved, the condition of the supporting teeth, the bite and long-term maintainability. Your dentist will explain the options relevant to your case.
