The implant and the prosthesis
A dental implant is a fixture placed in the jawbone to support a prosthesis such as a crown, bridge or denture. The visible replacement tooth is a separate component attached to the implant.
Assessment comes first
Suitability depends on factors including bone volume and quality, gum health, general medical history and habits such as smoking. Radiographic assessment is usually part of planning.
Maintenance
Implant-supported prostheses require ongoing cleaning and professional review. They are not maintenance-free replacements for natural teeth.
